Dear Reader,

As a gay 33-year-old cisgender man who has lived in Utah his entire life, I am no stranger to the challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community in our state. It is with both urgency and hope that I write this blog post, shedding light on the recent declaration of a national state of emergency for LGBTQ+ people by the Human Rights Campaign in June of 2023. In this difficult time, it is crucial to provide resources and support to our LGBTQ+ youth, enabling them to stay healthy, safe, and true to their authentic selves. Let's embark on this journey together, with strength, resilience, and compassion.

Understanding the State of Emergency: The declaration of a national state of emergency by the Human Rights Campaign underscores the significant challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals across the country, including right here in Utah. It serves as a call to action, urging us to prioritize the safety and well-being of our LGBTQ+ youth, who are particularly vulnerable during this time. By acknowledging this state of emergency, we can come together as a community to uplift and protect our LGBTQ+ youth, fostering an environment of love and acceptance.

Staying Healthy and Safe:

  1. Cultivate a Supportive Network: Building a strong support system is essential for LGBTQ+ youth. Encourage them to connect with local LGBTQ+ organizations, support groups, and online communities that offer guidance, understanding, and a sense of belonging. 2. Seek Counseling and Mental Health Services: Emphasize the importance of mental health and encourage LGBTQ+ youth to seek counseling or therapy from professionals who specialize in LGBTQ+ issues. Organizations such as the Trevor Project and Utah Pride Center offer valuable resources and support. (Sources: The Trevor Project - trevorproject.org, Utah Pride Center - utahpridecenter.org)

  3. Foster Education and Awareness: Encourage LGBTQ+ youth to educate themselves about their rights and the resources available to them. This knowledge empowers them to navigate challenging situations and advocate for themselves effectively. (Source: ACLU of Utah - acluutah.org)

  4. Create Safe Spaces: Encourage schools, community centers, and organizations to establish safe spaces where LGBTQ+ youth can feel validated, respected, and supported. These spaces should be free from discrimination and provide resources and opportunities for personal growth. (Source: GLSEN - glsen.org)

  5. Address Bullying and Discrimination: Help LGBTQ+ youth develop strategies to address and report bullying or discrimination. Advocate for inclusive policies and implement anti-bullying measures in schools and other institutions. (Sources: GLSEN - glsen.org, ACLU of Utah - acluutah.org)

Embracing Identity:

  1. Celebrate Diversity: Encourage LGBTQ+ youth to embrace their identities and celebrate the rich diversity within the LGBTQ+ community. Remind them that their authentic selves are something to be cherished and celebrated. (Source: Human Rights Campaign - hrc.org)

  2. Connect with Role Models: Introduce LGBTQ+ youth to positive role models, both locally and globally. Show them examples of successful individuals who have overcome challenges and found happiness and fulfillment in their lives. (Source: It Gets Better Project - itgetsbetter.org)

  3. Support LGBTQ+-Inclusive Resources: Advocate for LGBTQ+-inclusive literature, films, and media representation. These resources can provide inspiration, support, and a sense of validation for LGBTQ+ youth. (Sources: Lambda Literary - lambdaliterary.org, GLAAD - glaad.org)

  4. Encourage Self-Care: Teach LGBTQ+ youth the importance of self-care, emphasizing activities that promote emotional well-being, such as journaling, meditation, creative outlets, and exercise. Encourage them to find healthy ways to express themselves and manage stress. (Source: National Alliance on Mental Illness - nami.org)

Conclusion: In this time of national state of emergency for LGBTQ+ people, we have an opportunity to come together and make a positive difference in the lives of our LGBTQ+ youth here in Utah. By providing support, resources, and fostering an environment of acceptance, we can empower them to navigate the challenges they may face and thrive as their true, authentic selves. Remember, your kindness, understanding, and compassion can make all the difference in their lives. Let us stand strong, united in our dedication to creating a safe and inclusive future for all.
